Seniors in the Townsville Outrigger Canoe Club

Are you 55 years or older and interested in water sports and improving your health and fitness?

Townsville Outrigger Canoe Club, the largest and oldest of the three clubs in Townsville, is encouraging those in the 55 and over age group interested in trying out the sport to come and join us for one of our beginner paddlers introductory training sessions.

An OPEN DAY was be held on 11th February 2007 on the beach at Townsville Strand

The Townsville Outrigger Canoe club has acquired a new OC6 Mirage canoe, specifically to support our large contingent of senior paddlers (55 years and over), who represent around 25% of total club membership.

Funding for the new canoe has been approved and provided by Active Aging North Queensland, a funding initiative of the Qld Government Dept of Communities, under the Home and Community falls prevention Initiative.

Then TRY OUTRIGGING

Townsville Outrigger Canoe Club recently received funding for Actively ageing and fall prevention from Tropical Population Health Unit Townsville

We did this by demonstrating the therapeutic benefits of outrigging.as a sport for seniors. One of our members said:

"I would like to share with you the benefits of paddling as a senior in sport. I enjoy the freedom of being on the ocean, breathing in fresh air; enjoy the sunrises and sunsets and the social interaction. I have noticed over the years through paddling that: " I no longer have back pain " I have not been to a doctor in 5 years " I have not taken any form of tablets for 5 years " I have increased mobility " I not longer need treatment for my back problems - how I love the savings Additional benefits are: " the social interaction with people which is so important in maintaining a healthy body and mind. " By training in the early morning or late afternoon has the additional benefit of receiving Vitamin D through the natural essence of sunshine without talking tables or enduring the damaging effects of the midday sun.
